We are all Treaty People, living in and striving for peace and sharing on the land we all call home.
Treaty 6 was signed on August 23, 1876 at Fort Carlton in Saskatchewan. The total area of the Treaty stretches from western Alberta, through Saskatchewan and into Manitoba; and includes 50 First Nations. More than an agreement between sovereign Nations, our Treaty is a covenant to recognize the value and kinship of all people who make this land home.
Organized through St. Luke's Anglican Church in the Holyrood community, our Treaty Recognition Event will help us learn about Treaty and our neighbours. Local Elder Russell Auger will lead us in a smudge ceremony at 10:30am. Afterwards we'll share bannock and berries and Sara Kaup from the Metis Nation of Alberta and CHEMO Youth Retreat will lead traditional Indigenous games in the field (like stick and hoop and double ball) for the young (and young at heart).
We hope to bring renewed understanding, relationships and joy to our Treaty which is meant to bring the people of this land prosperity and peace for "as long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the river flows."
Please remember to bring water if it is hot. We will sit on the ground or stand for ceremony so do bring a lawn chair if you require one. POSTER
