DIOCESAN AND PARISH NEWS

St. Michael's Palm Sundaya video adventure St. Michael and All Angels’ Anglican Church in Edmonton found a fun and creative way, on Palm Sunday, to share the Gospel story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. St. Michael’s rector, the Rev. Colleen Sanderson says the video ‘news story’ was the brain-child of Sunday school teacher Catherine McPherson, who recruited other parishioners to make it happen. River Corvec helped write the script and edited the cell phone footage provided by parishioners who recorded themselves in their homes, from Edmonton to Quebec City. “We literally came up with the idea at the beginning of the week, the script was written on Friday, the actors filmed themselves on Saturday, and the editing happened late Saturday night, and Sunday morning.” For more infomation visit:

Emerging from the Cave'Anthropos Epitaphios' The Epitaphios is a Christian religious icon, typically a large embroidered cloth bearing an image of the dead body of Christ. It is sometimes used on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, and as an altar cloth through the Season of Easter. In this meditational liturgy, which consists of a series of short selected scripture readings and imaginative exercises, we humans (anthropos) will seek to be similarly cloaked; to become human altars covered in the image of the body of Christ: Anthropos Epitaphios. Interface Worship at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Edmonton will present this Holy Saturday Vigil on April 11 at 7:00 pm on Zoom. To register, email Jim Robertson at interfaceworship@gmail.com. An Easter Story
The following story comes to the Synod Scene from the Rev. Dr. Joyce Mellor, Honourary Assistant at St. Luke's Anglican Church in Edmonton. This is a true story told to me by my sister about 25 years ago. The young girl was the daughter of her secretary. I have changed her name and the denomination. Otherwise it happened just this way... This is a story about a young girl I am calling Anne. Anne has Down's Syndrome. Every year, at school, she moved with her age peers to the next grade. The same happened in Sunday School. In the year that the students were to turn thirteen, Anne came home from her first Sunday School class in September and excitedly told her mother, "Mom, Mom, I am going to be confirmed!" While keeping a supportive face her Mom's heart sank. What if Anne couldn't understand enough to take her Baptismal Vows for herself? For more infomation visit:

Spiritual Practice in a Time of Self Isolation
The moonlight shines through the small opening between the curtains in my bedroom as the scream of the alarm clock goes off. It is 5:30 am and the start of a new day. For many people, the start of the day means a quick meal before a run or a spin on a bicycle. As a person of Indigenous ancestry and a follower of Jesus, my day starts differently. Grateful for the gift of each new day, I sit to express my gratitude to Creator in prayer. Each day starts with the smudge. Mixing a little sweet grass with sage and tobacco, I light the sacred medicines with a match and fan the small flame with my prayer fan to ensure that the smoke rises. Stolen Lands, Strong Heartsan excellent use of time while stuck at home The Anglican Church of Canada, in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions 94 Calls to Action, has created Stolen Lands, Strong Hearts, an hour long video documentary explaining proclamations made by kings and religious leaders more than 500 years ago, which created the environment for European explorers to consider the land they found as “empty” land and its millions of Indigenous inhabitants as “non-human.” A study guide accompanies the video for those who wish to pursue their study and increase their understanding of the ways this "Doctrine of Discovery" continues to affect us today.
