Anglican Church to Journey Alongside Pope into Season of Wisdom
Next week, when the leader of the Roman Catholic Church visits Amiskwaciy Waskahikan (meaning Beaver Hills House), the traditional meeting ground for many Indigenous communities, including Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Blackfoot and Métis people, members of the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton will be present. A small delegation from the Edmonton diocese, led by the Ven. Travis Enright, Archdeacon for Indigenous Ministries, and the Rev. Canon Dr. Scott Sharman, Ecumenical and Interfaith Coordinator, has been invited to witness the Pope’s visit to the former Ermineskin residential school in Maskwacis. In addition, a larger delegation of ecumenical partners will attend the papal mass at Commonwealth Stadium. Edmonton will serve as the home base for Pope Francis during his visit to Western Canada, taking place July 24-27, 2022. According to the organisers of “Walking Together” (papalvisit.ca), it is an opportunity for the Catholic Church to “strengthen its efforts to listen to, talk with and learn from residential school survivors, their families and their communities, and offer an apology for the role it played in the residential school system.” Archdeacon Enright views the papal visit as an historical opportunity for the institutional church to enter further into a season of wisdom by making reparations for its history of spiritual harm. “It will be extremely meaningful for the Pope (who represents the perpetrator of abuse) to offer an apology on the land with the people,” says Enright about the anticipated apology from Pope Francis for the Church’s role in running residential schools. After Four Decades as Director, Dr. Mark Says "Go Now in Peace" to Base Camp
A week before turning 65 this July, retiring Base Camp Director Mark Armstrong had a pre-birthday celebration with friends in the beautiful Alberta wilderness; something he has done many times over the past four decades. "Dr. Mark," as Armstrong is affectionately known by campers and staff, fell in love with the outdoors as a young man working as a camp counsellor, and later as an assistant director, in Ontario in the mid-1970s. A few years later, when he and Fran moved to Edmonton to establish their family medicine and veterinary practices, he was recruited to the Edmonton diocese’s camping committee by the Rev. Ed McNeill. Over four decades, Armstrong has guided the diocesan camping program through many changes. At one time, diocesan camps included Camp Come Alive for younger children (grades 2-4 and 4-6) and Base Camp for Junior High-aged youth, as well as the North Canoe Voyageur run by Priscilla Haskin who took teens canoeing down the North Saskatchewan River and lakes in AB, BC and SK. Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility Important to Worship CommunitiesNearly 200 people complete Anti-Racism Team survey A diversity and inclusion survey conducted by the Edmonton diocese's Anti-Racism Team earlier this year shows that worship communities value making people feel welcome and included. The Ven. Jordan Haynie Ware, Archdeacon for Social Justice and Community Connection, says the team heard from across the diocese, from Westlock to Onoway to Edgerton, with a particularly strong response from the Church of the Nativity on Frog Lake First Nation. "We learned from the survey that members of the diocese from all backgrounds value diversity and inclusion," she says. "We were also made aware of a large community of people with disabilities in our church who would like to be contacted for more conversation. It was an oversight to not include more than one question about the needs of people with disabilities, and we apologise." Further comments are welcome at antiracism@edmonton.anglican.ca.
