‘Care for Our Common Home’ is the theme of the 2020 Outdoor Way of the Cross in Edmonton.
Due to restrictions relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, the prayer walk, scheduled for Good Friday, April 10, will not take place in its usual form. Instead of a physical walk, the event will be marked through a video of the stations. The video is available to the public at 10:00 am on Good Friday through Facebook and YouTube.
“The video invites us to think about the relevance and importance of the Gospel message in our world today in relation to the theme,” says Jim Gurnett, a member of the event’s organizing committee.
2020 is the 40th anniversary of the Outdoor Way of the Cross event in Edmonton. This year’s theme explores issues in the context of Psalm 24:1, which says, “The earth is the Lord’s, and its fullness is for all who dwell therein.” The theme is also informed by Pope Francis’s 2015 encyclical letter, Laudato si: On Care for Our Common Home. Local leaders contribute reflections on a number of topics including Indigenous perspectives on our common home, homelessness, immigration and migrant labour, water issues, land use, and more.
Other events to commemorate the 40th anniversary will be planned for later in the year.
