We give thanks for the faithful ministry of the Rev. Peter Yeung, rector of St. Philip's, Westlock. Peter is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his ordination to priestly ministry this May. An associate of the Order of the Holy Cross and ordained in 1974, in the Diocese of Niagara, Peter was posted to CFB Penhold (southwest of Red Deer) as a military chaplain 10 years later.
In the Diocese of Edmonton, he has ministered to the rural communities of Edgerton and Wainwright; Vermilion and Mannville; Drayton Valley, Evansburg; and most recently Westlock. He has served as a Regional Dean, Archdeacon and Acting Executive Archdeacon. He was also the Deputy Prolocutor and Prolocutor for the Ecclesiastical Province of Rupert's Land. Peter was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal for community service.
Peter writes:
Lately, every morning when I come to my church office, I have been greeted by a little bird sitting on our church sign and singing a song of welcome. It is also a song of resurrected life following the death of winter. Soon, this little bird and its companion will be building a nest for the next generation. And the life cycle goes on:
New Every Morning is the Love
Our wakening and uprising prove
Through sleep and darkness safely brought
Restored to life and power and thought (Common Praise 7: John Keble)
"May the sunlight and the rain be reminders that God is at work renewing the earth. As a God of renewal, He is ever at work in our lives, too.
Therefore, open our eyes and lives to the needed changes this Spring. Awaken us to new life and perspective, as prescribed by our Creator God.
In the name of Christ. Amen." (The Rev. Peter Yeung)
