Practicing Reconciliation

On Saturday, September 26, members of the Diocese of Edmonton joined other community groups for a Truth and Reconciliation—Every Child Matters gathering in Borden Park.

Though the weather was chilly, artists from Cree traditions, Uganda, Japan, China, India, Central America, and more presented music and dance. Elected officials reflected on the importance of truth and reconciliation, while other speakers bore witness to the ongoing generational effects of trauma and found hope in their healing.

There was room (and burgers!) for everyone. The Ven. Travis Enright, one of the organizers, pointed out that “this is what it means to take back our stories, our land, who we are as people, by honouring children and our connection to the land.”

Indigenous Knowledge Keeper Verna Fisher, who organized the event, explained its purpose: “We wanted different people from all around the world, so we can open up our minds and hearts and learn not to be racist, to understand that we are the human race, the two-legged, and we all matter in this world. We all have children who need that love and support and care. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from. We’re just happy to be here.”
