June 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the closure of the residential school that existed on the grounds of what we now know as Poundmaker's Lodge Treatment Centres. One of many such schools, this particular one was run by the United Church. There is a history of the church's involvement in residential schools that has had a profound affect on our Indigenous families, communities and peoples. But we are in a time of Truth and Reconciliation. We are in a time when we all have a part to play in making our circle and our community stronger. We all live in Treaty 6 territory... if anything, this is our common ground!! As human beings, however, there is much more common ground that we share!
We invite you to Walking on Common Ground on Wednesday July 11, 2018. The event starts with a pipe ceremony (women's and men's) at 10:00am at Poundmaker's Lodge Treatment Centres, 25108 Poundmaker Road, Edmonton. Lunch to follow.
The walk begins at 1:00pm at Canada Place, 9700 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton. We will walk together from there to the legislature building. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Michelle at michelle.iskwew@gmail.com.
Consider this your invitation and please feel free to share!
