During the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-25) Bishop Jane asked Fr. Donald MacDonald if he would accept the title of Honorary Canon of the Diocese of Edmonton in recognition of his commitment to ecumenical relations over many years.
A member of the Franciscan religious order, Fr. MacDonald served as a professor at Newman Theological College in Edmonton and was, in fact, Bishop Jane's teacher, long before she became bishop. In the letter she wrote inviting Fr. MacDonald to accept the title, the Bishop said, "As you enter into retirement after 50 years of teaching, I send you love and thanksgiving for your ministry from those of us who were fortunate enough to study with you at Newman College. It may come as a surprise to you to know how influential you were in our formation and that everyone one of us still talks about you with great affection. I pray for your continued health and well-being and I give thanks for your extraordinary witness to Christ. You have stirred God’s people to action, and I believe you have been a true force for good and an icon of Christ."
Bishop Jane offered the honorary title to Fr. MacDonald in recognition of what she describes as "incredible commitment to Anglican-Roman Catholic relations." The diocese is honoured and grateful that he has accepted.
