Last weekend, St. George's celebrated 150 years of ministry in Fort Saskatchewan with a dinner, outdoor service, and community meal.
The Rev. Regula Brandle, Rector, hosted the celebration. Bishop Stephen London traced the history of the parish from September, 1875, when Canon William Newton arrived to minister to the people at the Northwest Mounted Police fort. As the first Anglican missionary in the area, Canon Newton also helped found a church in Edmonton, which would become All Saints' Cathedral. Canon Newton's lilacs still grow near the site of his homestead in what is now Hermitage Park, a testament to his influence on local history.
The Mayor of Fort Saskatchewan, Gale Katchur, brought greetings from the City and recounted some of its history. She thanked the people of St. George's for their ongoing kindness, dedication, and care for their community. Ecumenical guests, current and past parishioners, family and friends, enjoyed dinner and conversation.
On Sunday morning, the parish hosted an outdoor Eucharist and BBQ feast.
