Bishop Victoria Visits Edmonton
The Edmonton diocese welcomed back a familiar presence this week. As her plane touched down on Alberta soil, the Rt. Rev. Victoria Matthews noticed “huge” changes in Edmonton’s footprint. “Looking out the window I thought we were a bit further out than we actually were. Then I realized how much the city has grown,” says Matthews, here at Bishop Jane’s invitation to lead Clergy Day, her first official visit to Alberta since attending her successor’s consecration in 2008. “What I learnt very early on, when I came here 20 years ago, was there is something of a frontier spirit,” said Matthews. “One of the things I remember very, very clearly about Alberta is that sense of community.” For more infomation visit: http://edmonton.anglican.org/news/bishop-victoria-visits-edmonton

Help Buyé seniors for only $5
Here's an idea for a simple fundraiser that will make a world of difference to senior citizens in Buyé diocese. Edmonton diocese invites you and your parish to hold an after-service coffee hour one Sunday in September. You probably do that anyway, right? If parishioners can donate $5 on that day, the diocese will use the money to support an amazing medical initiative in Buyé. Our partners there in the Buyé Mothers' Union are working to provide seniors with a card that gives them 80% coverage of medical expenses for a year. It only costs $5 but is out of reach for most seniors, who have worked at hard physical labour most of their lives, and now don't even have a pension. Heartbeat of the ChurchPrayers of the Church - for the Church September 2018 marks the 125th anniversary of the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada. To mark the occasion, and to prepare for General Synod 2019, Archbishop Fred Hiltz is inviting parishes and dioceses across the country to join together in dialogue, prayer and reflection through Conversation Circles. He asks that each circle create a prayer expressing their "heartbeat for the church." The prayers will be shared at General Synod 2019, which is also the time when Archbishop Hiltz will step down as Primate. Conversation Circles can take place anytime from now until May 7, 2019. You can find all you need to know about this initiative on the ACC website. For more infomation visit:

Peacemaking in IraqKing's prof available to speak In May, King’s Sociology Professor Randy Haluza-DeLay participated in a delegation to the Kurdish region of Iraq with the human rights organization Christian Peacemakers Teams (www.cpt.org). He is available for invitations from churches to share his experience and the peacemaking work of Christians in Iraq and that of CPT around the world. Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without their own nation-state and face extensive discrimination and even genocidal attacks from governments of the four countries where they historically live–Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran. There are no easy solutions. Prayer is needed that the remaining Christians in the region remain actively faithful to the Prince of Peace. Contact Dr. DeLay at randy.haluza-delay@kingsu.ca. |
