University of Alberta Honours Bishop Jane

Community invited to celebrate as Anglican Bishop receives top alumni award

The University of Alberta (@UAlbertaAlumni) invites members of the community to celebrate as Bishop Jane Alexander, ’93 MEd, ’97 PhD, receives an Alumni Honour Award for her leadership in local and international human rights initiatives. UAlberta President David H. Turpin will present the Rt. Rev. Dr. Alexander and 20 other alumni with their awards on Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton, 7:00 pm. The Alumni Honour Award recognizes the significant achievements and contributions over a number of years by University of Alberta alumni to their profession and/or their community. In Edmonton, Bishop Jane might be most closely identified with the city’s anti-poverty initiative. Bishop Jane, the 10th bishop of Edmonton, co-chaired the Mayor’s Task Force for the Elimination of Poverty in Edmonton and now serves as co-chair of EndPoverty Edmonton, working with community leaders to end poverty in the city within a generation. She also gives close attention to the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission — inviting her diocese to reflect deeply on reconciliation with Indigenous peoples — and to grassroots movements drawing attention to missing and murdered Indigenous women. Within the church, she has advocated for same-gender marriage, and in 2012, the Anglican church agreed to bless these unions. Her diocese also helped build an HIV clinic and provided education and medical support to a community in Burundi, Africa. Prior to her ordination in 1998, she was a music and special education teacher in northern England, and then in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta, leading to a PhD thesis on cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease in persons with Down syndrome.

Team Jesus Spruces Up Yellowhead

The Mission of St. Saviour in Wabamun did their annual highway clean-up on September 10, 2017. Nine members of Team Jesus had lunch together after church before heading out on cleaning duty. Keeping our bags from blowing away in the wind was a challenge on this blustery day. However, we succeeded in cleaning our section of the highway. If you are travelling west of Wabamun, you can spot our sign at the foot of the on-ramp meeting the highway. Submitted by Sue Burgess, Rector’s Warden

In our culture there are as many definitions of ‘spirituality’ as there are people. The term, just as the word ‘like,’ has been so overused that it means nothing that most of us can hold onto. Come for a half-day introduction to this topic and explore some of the ways that we can open to the Holy in our day to day lives. Suggested donation of $10 or as you are able.

Pioneer Memorial

Pioneer Memorial

Wednesday, September 20 at 7:00PM

On September 20, 2017, we will be holding a Memorial Service for the Rev. Seymour Dallas who, after serving in the Barrhead area for five years, returned to England, joined up and served as chaplain in France until killed in action September 20, 1917. The Rev. Seymour Dallas was on staff of St. Mary Abbots Kensington in London when he was sent out to work in the Diocese of Edmonton. He was posted to the Mission House at Lac La Nonne, and from there started to serve the Barrhead area as it was to become. At that time there were no roads, but only trails through the country. He travelled by foot or horseback. He was the inspiration for building community halls, schools and churches in this area. The church called Paddle River, later moved to Barrhead after the railroad came in in 1927, and was called St. Mary Abbots after the home church in Kensington. All are welcome to celebrate the legacy of this adventurous priest and his pioneer ministry!
