$5 - 5 Ways - 5 SundaysSupport a Medical Initiative in Buyé It's back! Last year's September Coffee Fundraiser was so successful, we've decided to do it again. POSTER The Mothers' Union in our sister diocese of Buyé launched an amazingly practical initiative in 2018, helping senior citizens and less advantaged families to get a medical card, which gives them 80% medical coverage for a full year. The card costs about $5.00, but that is out of reach for many of the people who need it most. For more infomation visit:

Ukulele-playing, Canoeing and Lip-synching Challenge Highlights of Base Camp 2019Fifteen campers head to Lac La Biche for faith-filled, outdoor adventure A yellow school bus rolled into a northeast Edmonton Costco parking lot on a hot and sunny July afternoon to transport 15 adventurous teens from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Congolese, Sudanese and Syrian, to Base Camp 2019. Some of the campers excitedly greeted friends from previous years, while six campers anxiously awaited their first taste of the Edmonton diocese’s annual summer camp. The bus was running behind schedule which made for an extra-long, but definitely worthwhile wait to begin their two-and-a-half-hour journey northeast to Lac La Biche. Rolling into Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park and spilling off the bus, campers quickly transformed our group camping site into a hive of activity: unloading the bus in record time and lifting canoes and kayaks down from trailers. The campers were divided into three groups and set out to find a location to pitch their tents. The first group claimed a spot on a wide trail behind the cook house. Group Two (AKA “The Boys”) pitched their tent on a patch of green grass closest to the lake. This low spot provided ready water access but, later in the week when the campsite was hit with torrential rains, members of the group needed all hands on deck to construct a canal to divert the water flow. Undeterred by a few broken tent poles, “The Sardines,” as they christened themselves, packed into the third tent. Ironically, their tent stayed the driest when rain soaked our camp.

Bishop Visits Vermilion Fairfor pie from St. Saviour's pie booth! Bishop Jane and her assistant Jennifer made the journey east for the annual Vermilion Agricultural Fair on July 26. First and most important order of business, of course, was to stop at the St. Saviour pie booth. The bakers of St. Saviour’s have been running the booth since 1915. Bishop Jane enjoyed a piece of raspberry pie; blueberry for Jen. They chatted briefly with the ladies in the booth but moved on quickly as a big line began to form behind them! They took in some of the equestrian competition (Jen’s favourite), watched children grooming and showing their sheep (Bishops Jane’s favourite), the draft horse show, and some of the cattle show. The Appeal of John Bunyan
This free-of-charge public event is part of the 9th triennial conference of the International John Bunyan Society. John Bunyan (1628-88) wrote the Pilgrim’s Progress, one of the most read and translated works in English literature. Before publishing this classic, Bunyan spent 12 years in Bedford Jail for dissenting from laws requiring religious conformity. Could this happen today? What does the past teach us about law, literature, church, and state? We will explore Bunyan’s trial in three stages: i. a dramatic presentation based on his writings; ii. an appeal of his conviction argued by lawyers before a panel of Alberta judges; iii. audience questions and discussion with insights from international scholars. Join us Thursday, August 15, 2019, 7:00-9:00 pm at the Anglican Parish of Christ Church, 12116 102 Ave., Edmonton. |
