Diocese Hosts Parish Finances Training Day
Representatives from more than 20 rural and urban parishes attended a workshop on parish financial management hosted by the Rev. John Gee, diocesan treasurer, and the Ven. Alan Perry, executive archdeacon, at All Saints' Cathedral on January 18. John Gee began with a brief reflection on the role of Parish Treasurer and highlighted a number of 'best practices' and key responsibilities. In the afternoon session, Alan Perry focused on how a narrative budget can be used to help tell the story of a parish, painting a broader, more inspiring picture of parish finances than the traditional line-by-line budget. Two other speakers also contributed. Margaret Glidden, diocesan communications director, spoke about the trend toward online giving and outlined the benefits of providing a “click and give” option on parish websites. Toby Ramsden, chair of the diocesan administration and finance (A&F) committee and people’s warden for St. John the Evangelist in Edmonton, presented on the benefits of a cloud-based accounting system. A Tradition of Community at Christmas
Some traditions from our countries of origin are incredibly important to keep, and so redemptive they need to be shared. The tradition of Misa de Gallo is one of them. For the last few years, the Filipino Congregation of St. Matthias in Edmonton has participated in Misa de Gallo/Simbang Gabi (translated: Midnight Mass/Night Masses of the nine days before Christmas).... Going into this tradition, which was brand new to me (the Rev. Eric Kregel), I was a bit nervous: ‘do I have time and energy to do nine days of mass and meetings during the busiest time of the year?’ Entering into this rhythm and discipline, however, I found myself becoming less busy and less stressed.
