$5 -5 Ways Appeal Improving Health of Buye Seniors

$5 -5 Ways Appeal Improving Health of Buye Seniors

The “$5-5 Ways Campaign,” a diocesan-wide appeal by parishes each fall, continues to help seniors access healthcare in Buyé, Burundi. In 2019, $6,565 was raised during parish coffee-hour appeals and by individual donations. This money has helped the Mother’s Union provide thousands of senior citizens in Burundi with medical cards, reducing the cost of their medical treatment 80 per cent. The cards are valid for one year.

“I am delighted to inform you that the ongoing project of assisting the elderly is going well throughout the parishes of the Diocese of Buyé,” writes the Rev. Audace Kwizera, Buyé diocesan secretary, in an email to Edmonton diocesan treasurer the Rev. John Gee on February 17, 2020. “This project is appreciated by the recipients, the church and the administration. With your support, we have been able to assist elderly people who are unable to afford medical cards by themselves…Our prayer is that it (the program) should continue.”

Philosopher Cafe: Stolen Lands, Strong Hearts

Philosopher Cafe: Stolen Lands, Strong Hearts

Film screening and discussion led by Dr. Stephen Martin - Sunday, March 1, 2020

You are invited to join the Anglican Parish of Christ Church, 12116-102 Ave, for Philosopher Café on Sunday, March 1, at 4 pm. We will view the Anglican Church of Canada’s film: The Doctrine of Discovery: Stolen Lands, Strong Hearts. It is a film about a devastating decision, made over 500 years ago, which continues to profoundly impact Indigenous and Settler people worldwide. Pope Alexander VI ruled that the lands being discovered by European explorers at the time was “empty” land and its millions of Indigenous inhabitants were “non-human.” The purpose of this film is to respond to the TRC Calls to Action by helping to provide education and insight into the racist foundations of many of our property and other laws still in existence to this day. Dr. Stephen Martin will lead us in our discussion.

Nearly one-quarter of Canadian adults say they have no religion. Who are they? Why and where has this population grown? Joel Thiessen and Sarah Wilkins-Laflamme, authors of the upcoming book None of the Above: Nonreligious Identity in the US and Canada, will explore these questions against the backdrop of three theoretical frameworks in the sociology of religion: states of decline, individualization and spiritualization and polarization. Their central claim is that there is a gradual decline happening in stages across time and generations at different rates in various social, cultural and regional contexts, leading to the rise of religious nones.
