Please Remember in Your Prayers this Week

  • Those who are sick, suffering or in need: for Denise, Jeannette; for all who are struggling with physical or mental illness due to COVID-19; for safety in efforts to re-open our society; for all who are doing their best to serve others in any way; and for all victims of racial prejudice and violence.
  • Those who have died and those who mourn: for the repose of the soul of Raphael David Johnston a former priest of this diocese who later joined the Orthodox Church in America, David passed from this life on July 31, 2020; for his wife Debbie and his whole family.
  • We pray for the people of Lebanon, remember our brothers and sisters in Christ in the Diocese of Jerusalem and the Middle East, as they recover from the devastating explosion on August 4.
  • We pray for the Episcopal Church of South Sudan’s Diocese of Athooch, where 23 people were killed and 20 others were wounded by gunmen on July 27.
  • Bishop Sixbert and the Diocese of Buyé (Twinned Parishes).
  • Our brothers and sisters in Christ from Treaty 6 and Treaty 8 First Nations, from the Métis Nation of Alberta, and from the Métis Settlements in Alberta.

Pray on MLK

Pray on MLK

an opportunity to join in prayer for racial justice

The Rev. Ron Horst (ret.) invites Edmonton diocese to join in a prayer event this Saturday, August 8.

“Pray on MLK” is a two-hour, event which will be located along streets and at memorials in the U.S. which are dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. It calls on participants to gather in these places, standing side by side but socially distanced, wearing facemasks that bear one prayerful word written on a piece of tape. The first hour is meant to be an hour of lament; the second, an hour of praise and worship. The event is being held on August 8 because the first street was named after Martin Luther King Jr. on August 8, 1968 in Chicago.

A US agency called civilrighteousness.org is coordinating this event, but Rev. Ron has created a Facebook page for all who are interested in connecting in the Edmonton area.

Cemeteries Tell Story of Community Beginnings

Cemeteries Tell Story of Community Beginnings

2,300-km rural Alberta road trip

Cemeteries are something we don’t often think about in our day to day church life. Clergy, of course, are familiar with cemeteries because of the number of burials they do. But for centuries once of the ways in which the Church has ministered to the community is to provide a place to bury the dead, often in church yards.

There are some 26 cemeteries in the Diocese of Edmonton. All, but one, are in current or former church yards. Five belong to active parishes (St. John’s, Cold Lake; St. John’s, Onoway; St. Peter’s, Lac La Nonne; Emmanuel, Gibbons; and St. Aidan’s and St. Hilda’s, Rexboro). All the rest belong to parishes that have been disestablished over the years, and thus they belong to the diocese. Two, Poplar Lake and Colchester, are maintained by nearby parishes (Good Shepherd, Edmonton; and St. Thomas’, Sherwood Park, respectively).

Interfaith Housing Initiative Needs Your Support

Interfaith Housing Initiative Needs Your Support

The steering committee of the Interfaith Housing Initiative has issued an appeal for support.

"The 2020 fiscal year is proving very challenging for the Interfaith Housing Initiative. Like so many of our partners and faith communities, we are facing funding shortages in this season that threaten our continuing work together."

Working under the organisational umbrella of the Edmonton diocese with gifts of meeting space, food, and volunteer energy from faith community members, the Interfaith Housing Initiative facilitates and advocates for important conversations around ending poverty and affordable housing, offering consultation coaching to both communities and developers via the TogetherWise program. It recognises and promotes opportunities for local faith communities to work together to respond to local needs.

THE SPIRITUAL EXERCISES OF ST. IGNATIUS

THE SPIRITUAL EXERCISES OF ST. IGNATIUS

The Rev. Jonathan Crane, the Rev. Dan  Ash (ret) and Pat Jameson, all trained and experienced spiritual directors at St. Augustine of Canterbury Anglican Church in Edmonton, will offer the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola beginning in September 2020. Also known as the 19th Annotation Retreat or the Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life, participants commit to pray an hour daily, see a spiritual director once a week, and keep a journal noting both God’s activity and his or her response during the time of prayer. The length of the retreat depends on the activity of the Spirit, the retreatant, and the director, but usually extends over seven or eight months.

St. Augustine's Parkland Exploring Centralised Online Booking

St. Augustine's Parkland Exploring Centralised Online Booking

A simple online booking system is being implemented by St. Augustine's Parkland to provide an orderly way of controlling how many souls attend worship services. Adding other churches to the system would be easy at a very negligible one-time cost, so the scheme is being offered to any parish in or beyond the diocese who could benefit with a little pre-service organization.
