Bishop Jane Alexander has appointed the Rev. Billy Isenor as Assistant Curate at St. Augustine Parkland, Spruce Grove, effective November 1, 2017. 

On the eve of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Lutheran, Anglican and Roman Catholic bishops launched an ecumenical initiative as a tangible expression of their renewed commitment to journey together in unity. During a service of common prayer in commemoration of the Reformation, held October 30, 2017 at All Saints’ Cathedral, Edmonton, co-presiders Archbishop Richard Smith and Auxiliary Bishop Gregory J. Bittman, Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton; Bishop Larry Kochendorfer and Assistant to the Bishop for Mission Julianne Barlow, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCiC) Synod of Alberta and the Territories; Bishop Jane Alexander, Anglican Diocese of Edmonton; signed a statement inaugurating an Edmonton Lutheran-Anglican-Roman Catholic (LARC) Dialogue group – a new structure for ongoing dialogue between the three churches.

The 5th annual Christian-Muslim dialogue event: “More Important Now Than Ever,” drew more than 200 members of Edmonton Christian and Muslim faith communities to St. Matthias Anglican Church on October 28, 2017.

The dialogue, hosted by A Common Word Alberta, featured distinguished Shia Muslim and Mennonite Christian theological scholars, and was emceed by Ibrahim J. Long, Islamic Studies Coordinator and Chaplain and the Rev. Heather Liddell, assistant curate at Holy Trinity Anglican Church. 

“Interfaith dialogue is no longer a luxury. It’s a necessity," said Long. He and Liddell quizzed one another about the symbols they wore as a sign of their faith. Liddell said she wears her clerical collar as “a symbol of my office in the world that says to people if you have questions about Jesus, come talk to me.” Long described the pin he wears above his heart as a symbol of the Prophet Muhammad’s sandal “to show that we follow in His footsteps.”

A Cursillo weekend is a personal, lively and informative event that invites you to:

·Examine what it means to be a Christian in today’s world  

The Weekend Experience runs from Friday evening to late Sunday afternoon. It revolves around a series of talks given by a team of lay people and clergy, which are followed by small group discussions. There are also times for worship, fellowship, personal reflection, fun, prayer and singing. The weekend is a time for you, as a baptized Christian, to be strengthened in your spiritual journey. Thus you are enabled to follow Jesus more faithfully and effectively.  

Interested? Discuss the possibility of attending a Cursillo weekend, with your parish priest or with someone in the Cursillo community.

Note: Couples are urged to attend together if possible. If not possible please consider one spouse attending this year and the other next year.

Cost: Donations from those attending previous weekends covers much of the approximate $200 cost per person. On the weekend, you are given an opportunity to make a tax-deductible donation towards future attendance of others. Finances, however, should not dictate whether or not you attend a weekend.

Every year the Diocese of Edmonton participates in the 'No Room in the Inn' project. Organized by the Edmonton and District Council of Churches, this project provides financial support to a different agency each year; one that is working to house the homeless in the Edmonton area. This year, 'No Room in the Inn' has chosen to support the Edmonton Region of the Canadian Mental Health Association. The Neighbourly is a monthly publication of the Capital Region Interfaith Housing Initiative, of which the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton is a founding and active member. November is Housing Month, and several big events will be held dealing with the issue of homelessness. See the details in this edition and take the opportunity to come along and find out more. 

As Partners for Life, members of the diocese are encouraged to roll up our sleeves and give blood to a neighbour in need. As part of the Canadian Blood Services (CBS) Program, we have donated 67 units of blood toward our pledge of 100 units by December 31, 2017.

This event begins with the documentary Audrie & Daisy (currently on Netflix), and concludes with an open talkback, led by the subjects of the film who will be present. It deals with a deeply important subject, and, although heavy, it is handled very well in the presentation. The Diocese of Edmonton along with St. John's invite you to hear this story and be a voice for change alongside them. Remember too, that this is an event for you regardless of whether your teen attends.
