Sarah brings a wealth of experience to her role, having previously served the Edmonton diocese as an administrative assistant at All Saints’ Cathedral and then as assistant to Bishop Jane Alexander, before relocating to Sweden, in 2013, for Grant’s work. “I thrive on being a problem solver,” says Sarah who has Sarah has a BA degree in Psychology, minoring in Christian Theology. “I enjoy managing tasks that would allow Bishop Stephen London and the rest of the team to focus on the larger picture.” Sarah and Grant (pictured) will divide their home base until June when Grant and the kids will join Sarah in Canada. Bishop Jane Awarded Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Medal
The Hon. Lori Sigurdson, MLA for Edmonton-Riverview, awarded the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal to Bishop Jane Alexander during Choral Evensong at All Saints’ Cathedral on December 18, the fourth Sunday of Advent. Consecrated as the 10th Bishop of the Diocese of Edmonton on May 11, 2008, and currently serving as Assisting Bishop in the Territory of the People in central B.C., "Bishop Jane shows compassion, positivity and resilience, as she drives for change,” said Sigurdson. "Bishop Jane was instrumental in developing social justice leadership in her community. She was the co-chair of End Poverty Edmonton..." In November, Bishop Stephen London was presented the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal for his efforts to encourage ecumenical dialogue. Cathedral Outreach Volunteers Host Neighbours at Christmas Luncheon
Volunteers led by Jennifer Rees and Darlene and Randy Niederhaus prepared an Outreach Christmas Luncheon featuring a turkey dinner with all the trimmings for participants of the outreach programs at All Saints’ Cathedral. People ate together at festively decorated tables as Mary-Lou Cleveland played Christmas music in the background. Santa stopped in for a piece of homemade pie. “It was a lovely way to connect folks from our four outreach communities,” says the Rev. Ruth Sesink Bott, All Saints’ Vicar. “We’re developing a community of care around people like our seniors from the Cathedral Close who have a restricted income and, in many cases, not a large support network of family and friends.” For more infomation visit: http://edmonton.anglican.ca/news/cathedral-outreach-volunteers-host-neighbours-at-christmas-luncheon

Keeping Faith: First-Person Stories from the Diocese of EdmontonJeremy Spurgeon: “Time, Faith, and Music”
Jeremy Spurgeon is the third career organist of All Saints’ Cathedral, Edmonton. The first, Vernon Barford, served from 1900-1956; the second, Hugh Bancroft, served from 1957- 1980. Jeremy took up the position of Director of Music at All Saints’ on “Low Sunday” (the Sunday after Easter), in 1980. He’s been here a long time, but he still has years to go if he’s going to beat Vernon Barford! I met Jeremy when I joined the cathedral choir in the week preceding Palm Sunday, 2007. My husband Joe and I had been attending Choral Eucharist at the cathedral, sporadically, for about two years, and we had developed the notion that Jeremy was a sort of Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the good ship All Saints’ and that the organ console was his “bridge” (Star Trek fans will know what I’m talking about). As I’ve become acquainted with Jeremy over the years, I’ve learned that our early notions were both right and wrong: right in our perception of expertise, energy, and, obviously, Englishness, but wrong because Jeremy is, of course, very much his own personality who, for instance, enjoys silliness, poetic imagery, and countless little cups of espresso coffee. But I won’t presume to describe him for you; I’ll let him do so for himself in the story that emerged from our interview chat, a conversation that took place in the relaxed atmosphere of his music-strewn office at the cathedral on October 21, 2016. By the way, Jeremy’s was the last interview I conducted, but Bishop Steve and I have decided to put his story first (for the last shall be first). So, with future monthly installments of Keeping Faith, I’ll be working backward toward the oldest members of the diocese and the stories that take us back to the early days. (Gathered, edited, and presented by Karen Simons) Installment #1: Jeremy Spurgeon’s “Time, Faith, and Music” For more infomation visit:

Exploring Cultural Assumptions
The Network of Biblical Storytelling Canada is hosting an online festival, February 3-5, 2023. Titled “Biblical Telling: A New Way Home,” the online gathering will explore ways in which the culture we grow up in can lead us to make assumptions about the meaning of the biblical texts we read and tell. Uncovering these assumptions and values is a way of knowing ourselves better, respecting the biblical witness more fully, and becoming more sensitive to those of cultures different from our own.
