Following the Shepherd-Leading the SheepMichael Harvey speaks at All Saints' Anglican Cathedral In 2011, a volcano erupted in Grímsvötn, Iceland, creating a giant ash cloud and disrupting air travel across western and northern Europe. Yet, somehow, Michael Harvey was aboard the last flight out of the UK bound for his first visit to the Edmonton diocese. God had a plan. Over the past seven years, Harvey has been shepherding us toward becoming not only a welcoming church, but an intentionally inviting church. This continued for six days last week, as Harvey visited the diocese once again and offered encouragement in facing our fear of rejection by trusting that, in God, we may realize the benefits of being a proactive and invitational church. Perhaps what the church today needs to hear, Harvey told the Choral Eucharist congregation at All Saints’ Cathedral on Good Shepherd Sunday, is that we don’t need more leaders. We need more followers of the Shepherd; people willing to take a step of faith and let God be in charge; more connection with the God who wants to direct us. Harvey's Inviting Premise Appeals to Cursillo Community
Michael Harvey’s logic that if we simply invite a person to sample our faith, God will do the rest, was met with enthusiastic support at April’s Cursillo Ultreya in Edmonton. The Cursillo Community encourages Christians to make a friend, be a friend and bring a friend to Christ. It can be a daunting challenge, but Harvey’s toolkit provides some practical methods to smooth the way. Great Ideas
While at the Jesus Shaped Life Conference in Kuala Lumpur this week, Bishop Jane came across some great ideas in evangelism and has asked that this link be sent out for everyone to have a look. 'Evangelism' is not a popular word in our culture, but sharing the love of Jesus Christ is at the core of Christian belief. Or as this website puts it: "...we seek, name and celebrate Jesus’ loving presence in the stories of all people - then invite everyone to more." Have a look! https://www.episcopalchurch.org/evangelism-toolkit |

Living the 8th FireMay 5, Southminster-Steinhauer United Church, 10740 19 Ave NW, Edmonton
In 2017, the Our Common Ground ecumenical committee hosted four community gatherings in response to the TRC’s Calls to Action. To keep the fire and dialogue going around reconciliation, the Inner City Pastoral Ministry (ICPM) and Moving Forward with Reconciliation invite you to "Living the 8th Fire." This 9-week small group gathering follows a curriculum designed from the CBC documentary series 8th Fire, which is hosted by CBC journalist Wab Kinew, from the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation in Northern Ontario. The curriculum is designed to help restore the 8th Fire vision in the hearts and minds of those who choose to participate in the learning. It is intended that participants, as vessels of hope, will seek out ways to get to know their neighbours. Living the 8th Fire will be held Saturday mornings, 10 am: May 5, June 2, October 6, November 3, December 1. All Saints' parishioners bring the hammer down!Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Works Project On a beautiful spring day, members of All Saints’ Anglican Cathedral traded in their clerical collars and office attire for hard hats and work boots to participate in the 7th Annual Interfaith-Habitat Works project. They were welcomed by friendly, safety-conscious and virtuously patient Habitat for Humanity staff tasked with transforming the faith community team into confident and capable home builders. “Our day at Habitat was fun, fulfilling, uplifting and tiring," said Canon Barbara Burrows after participating in her fourth Habitat build. “Each time I go, I come away with a renewed appreciation for home builders,” she said. Burrows worked alongside her daughter Lisa Blair, long-time Habitat volunteer Ted McClung and Betty Benson installing wire shelving units in the closets of three nearly complete units. “Ted took us under his wing, and shepherded us through. There was a rather steep learning curve to begin with, particularly in using a power drill, but we made steady progress. He was a great and patient teacher,” she said.
