Remembering those who Died Homeless

Remembering those who Died Homeless

On Friday, June 15, around 100 people gathered at the Boyle Street drop-in centre in the shadow of Roger’s Place for the 2018 Homeless Memorial Walk in honour of 107 Edmonton residents who died last year without a place to call home. Led by EPS piper Constable Dale McDonald, participants walked together to a small park north of Edmonton City Hall where they were smudged by Gord Holub before laying flowers at the Homeless Memorial. Jim Gurnett, a board member for the Edmonton Coalition on Housing and Homelessness, started the walk 13 years ago after attending the monthly homeless memorial in Toronto.

A Pilgrimage Behind Bars

A Pilgrimage Behind Bars

Dr. Arlette Zinck gave a powerful talk at Edmonton Cursillo’s June Ultreya as she described her life-changing calling to teach English literature to inmates at Edmonton Maximum Security Institution. The King’s University Dean of Arts and Bunyan Scholar said Cursillo’s principle of pilgrimage resonated strongly with her because the urging to offer “English 214 (Prison Edition)” at the Max was a journey that started with scriptural endorsement.

Hebrews 13: “Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”

Self-awareness a Key Element in Discipleship

Self-awareness a Key Element in Discipleship

Spiritual director and Edmonton diocese staff member Shelly King led members of St. George’s, Fort Saskatchewan and St. Luke’s, Edmonton in an exercise of self-discovery on Saturday.

Under the guidance of Shelly’s husband Richard King, Archdeacon for Mission and Discipleship, the parishes of St. George and St. Luke are two of four parishes prototyping the I.D. initiative (a framework for discipleship) through the development of gift-based mission and ministry. I.D. is a tool intended to help church members identify, develop and utilize their God-given gifts in the mission of God and in the power of God.

In conjunction with Richard’s teachings on the Five Fold Spiritual Gifts as described in Ephesians (chapter 4), Shelly has been offering sessions on the Enneagram, a personality-typing system centered on nine archetypal human character structures.

Calling All 11-15-Year-old Adventure Seekers!

Calling All 11-15-Year-old Adventure Seekers!

July 14-20 Base Camp Heads North to Lesser Slave Lake

Calling all 11-15-year-old adventure-seekers! This summer's Christian outdoor adventure camp happens at Marten River campground, from July 14-20.

Our Camp Director Dr. Mark Armstrong will lead Base Campers north to Alberta's inland ocean, Lesser Slave Lake. The water and wildlife there is a lush contrast to the Badlands of Bad Donkey Base Camp, last year.

Base Camp offers fun, companionship, campfires, canoeing, sit-upon kayaking, and hiking. This year's theme is linked to the Baudelaire orphans: A Series of Unfortunate Events. So the best advice is to Look away, look away, look away!  There will be lots of suffering to go around! Lesser Slave Lake is on a major bird migration route, and we are planning a trip to the Bird Observatory there.

The cost for the full week is $350.

Or would you like to volunteer to be on staff this year? Camp is still looking for a life-guard and more counsellors. Plus, we need a certified Cunningham bus driver to get us to camp!

For more details, please email Mark Armstrong.

Volunteers and campers can register online here.

PWRDF Youth Council T-Shirt Contest

PWRDF Youth Council T-Shirt Contest

Imagine a Truly Just, Healthy and Peaceful World

What is the contest?

PWRDF Youth Council is calling on youth and young adults ages 16-30 to imagine what a truly just, healthy and peaceful world would look like. Then, use your drawing, sketching or painting skills to show us! Maybe you think a truly just, healthy and peaceful world is one where everyone has enough to eat, or one where everyone has a safe home to go to at night. Maybe it’s one where everyone treats each other fairly – it’s up to you to decide!

What’s the prize?

The winning design will be printed on new t-shirts produced by the PWRDF Youth Council. The design – and the new t-shirts – will be unveiled in front of hundreds of youth at the 2018 Canadian Lutheran and Anglican Youth (CLAY) gathering in Thunder Bay, Ontario this August!

The winning artist will also receive a selection of t-shirts featuring their design to distribute to family and friends.

How do I enter?

Click here for contest rules and entry form and to upload your design. Entries must be received by July 3, 2018. Contact our Youth Engagement Facilitator Su McLeod with any other questions.
