Pray for Base Camp 2018!
Base Camp Director Dr. Mark Armstrong, 24 teens and tweens, and an intrepid volunteer staff have made camp on the shores of Lesser Slave Lake. They are enjoying all kinds of outdoor fun, including time on the beach! Please pray for the campers and volunteers for a safe, adventure-filled week, for growth in their faith and for safe travel home. |
Godspeed Keith and Bev!Couple Travelling by Car and Ship to New Ministry in Central Newfoundland The Rev. Keith Denman and his wife Bev Middleton are journeying across the country by car and ship this week. Keith has accepted a ministry position in the Parish of Clarenville in the Diocese of Central Newfoundland. He has served in our diocese for many years, most recently as an honorary assistant at Christ Church, Edmonton; interim priest-in-charge of Holy Trinity, Edson; and as a member of the administration and finance committee. We thank Keith and Bev for their ministry and wish them Godspeed as they begin this next chapter. |

Edmonton Diocese Welcomes Church of South India ModeratorThe Most Rev. Thomas Oommen Confirms Seven Members of Ascension Congregation Bishop Jane Alexander welcomed Church of South India Moderator the Most Rev. Thomas Oommen and his wife Dr. Susan Thomas to the Edmonton diocese July 13 and 14. On his first visit to western Canada, Archbishop Oommen, who is from the Madhya Kerala Diocese, confirmed seven members of CSI Ascension Church at a special service at All Saints’ Cathedral on Saturday morning. The Ascension congregation has been holding services at St. Luke’s, Edmonton on Saturday mornings for two years. “We praise God for the Church of England missionary movement and the Anglican influence that radically changed the lives of people in India spiritually, socially and politically,” he said. “Today, through prayer, commitment, dedication and devotion we are in Canada and around the world. The CSI is made up of 24 dioceses and 4.5 million people of different social backgrounds. Buyé Service of Ordination
The Rev. Dominique Ciza, Diocesan Secretary for the Diocese of Buyé, sent greetings this week and thanks for the support of Edmonton Diocese and for our prayers for a service of ordination held on July 15. He writes: “Many thanks for your prayer, the ordination ceremonies went well and we were blessed to receive eight bishops. I would like to inform you that those six deacons and four priests were trained with the support from the Diocese of Edmonton. We are so thankful for that. By now, Bishop Sixbert is on the way to Toronto, Canada, for a conference, and after the conference he will visit you.” Bishop Sixbert and his wife Clotilde will return with Bishop Jane from the Consultation of Anglican Bishops in Dialogue conference and will visit Edmonton Diocese the week of July 23-27. Sue Oliver and the crew at Christ Church have generously offered to host a family BBQ Potluck to welcome Bishop Sixbert and his wife Clotilde from Buyé Diocese! Please be sure to invite your family, friends, friends' families, and anyone in between. Christ Church will have the BBQ going with burgers and hotdogs. Please let us know if you can bring salads and sides and desserts. Introduction to the Hebrew ScripturesRegister by September 7 This course, offered at All Saints’ Cathedral on Wednesday evenings starting at 7 PM, September 12, is a survey of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). It is intended for those preparing for ordination, layreaders, and those with a love for these texts and for scripture. For those new to the scriptures this course will give a solid understanding of the basic themes, issues and narrative of Hebrew scripture. For those already familiar with these texts you will encounter new ways of looking at them. For those preparing for ordination extra course work will be given to allow you to gain credit for this as part of ordination preparation. Education for Ministry (EfM) is seeking students for the 2018-2019 course year. Registration deadline extended! We are extending the date for new registrations. Please enquire any time before September. EfM is a four-year program of theological education for ministry, intended to help people become more grounded in their faith, and to discern their ministry in the church. Graduates of EfM may be found in many areas of diocesan ministry, both lay and ordained. A brief overview and registration information may be found in the attached brochure. Walking on Common Ground for Reconciliation and HealingReaching Out to Others in Fair and Equitable Way Drum songs pierced through the drone of downtown Edmonton traffic on July 11 as a convoy of 100 people, including members of All Saints’ Cathedral Social Justice Committee, walked arm-in-arm, carrying banners and waving flags paraded down Jasper Avenue from Canada Place to the Alberta Legislature. The Common Ground reconciliation walk began with a pipe ceremony in the morning and was organized by Poundmaker’s Lodge Treatment Centres, the Christian Reformed Church and the Edmonton Native Healing Centre to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Edmonton Indian Residential School near St. Albert. Interfaith Journeys of Discovery ConferenceThursday, August 02 at 9:00AM The annual conference of the North American Interfaith Network (NAIN Connect) takes place at MacEwan University in Edmonton from July 31 through August 3. Hosted by the Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action, the program features several keynote speakers, including the Honourable Roméo Dallaire, and Dr. Marie Wilson, one of the commissioners of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In cooperation with the United Church’s Moving Forward With Reconciliation, Inner City Pastoral Ministry (ICPM) will offer a panel discussion entitled “Edmonton’s Experience of Reconciliation and Healing” on Thursday morning, August 2 from 9:00 to 10:30 am. As well, Michelle Nieviadomy, ICPM’s Oskapewis, will lead a Standing Stones ceremony and offer insights regarding Indigenous life and wellness. Traditional Pow WowAugust 9-12 in Maskwacis If you missed the Ermineskin Pow Wow last weekend, the Samson Cree Nation will be hosting one in August. This traditional Pow Wow will be held at Bear Park in Maskwacis, August 9-12 with drumming and dance competitions, a parade, and much more. St. Philip's, Westlock Hosts Wet 'n Wild VBSThirty-seven Kids Take Part in Splash Canyon Thirty-seven children from several denominations took part in “Splash Canyon” VBS, hosted by St. Philip's, Westlock at Trinity Lutheran Church. The kids journeyed with God to save Moses from the Nile, help the Hebrew people cross the river Jordon into the Promised Land, cure Naaman with the waters of the Jordan, save Paul from shipwreck and witness Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. St. Luke's Goes NorthFort Liard Adventure: Part 1 A team from St. Luke’s, Edmonton met with On Eagle’s Wings staff last week, in preparation for a trip to the Northwest Territories. They received an introduction to vacation bible school curriculum and northern culture from Kathy-Lynn McKay and the Rev. Lesley Hand. The team of four – Rebecca Pinto, Cathy Allen, Karen MacDonald and St. Luke rector, the Ven. Richard King – will run the VBS in the community of Fort Liard, NWT from July 30 to August 3. The idea to take on this mission took form very quickly. On Eagle’s Wings approached St. Luke’s in May and a grant was secured in June to cover most of the costs. The team is very excited for this adventure, but there is a lot to do! Please pray for the preparations, the travel, and most of all for the interactions they will have with the community in Fort Liard. |

Poverty doesn’t take Summer Vacation
The Mustard Seed’s Evening Meal Program feeds 300-350 people each night, Monday through Saturday. However, we are short on volunteers this summer. We are in urgent need of groups who are willing to prepare and serve dinner to those facing poverty in downtown Edmonton. ENGAGEDiscipling the Next Generation The Young Anglicans Project is presenting ENGAGE: a conference designed to "equip the saints to disciple the next generation." This event will kick off Friday evening October 12 for those who can make it. The main event is Saturday, October 13. Registration is $40 ($20 for students). A second conference presented by the Anglican Communion Alliance will run concurrently. The two side-by-side conferences will overlap with common worship, meals and some of the presentations.
