Enjoy an evening with acclaimed East Coast musicians J.P. Cormier and Jake Lauzon. J.P. is an award-winning bluegrass/folk/Celtic singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with many awards to his credit. Jake is a celebrated folk/roots/bluegrass artist who has toured widely.
J. P. started touring when he was just sixteen, and he’s still at it. We are thrilled to have him back in Edmonton, after appearances at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival and several folk clubs where he sells out houses! He has worked as a session musician, been on the festival circuit, played at the Grand Ole Opry, and been a sideman for musicians such as Waylon Jennings, Marty Stuart, Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Stompin' Tom Connors, and others.
In the mid-90s, he reentered the musical scene of his beloved East Coast on the island of Cape Breton. He exploded onto the trad scene as a fiddler, performing some of the most challenging music ever produced by fiddle legends with a facility that stunned onlookers, especially those who knew he didn’t grow up in Cape Breton but was born in Ontario to Cape Breton parents. Somehow, the music was in his blood, and his music was the real thing, sounding like he had been steeped in a handed-down brew of tradition.
After recording with so many others, J.P. Cormier released his first solo album in 1997 - “Another Morning”. That album has songs on it that are part of the East Coast's musical vocabulary today…Another Morning, Kelly's Mountain, and The Molly May. This album inspired some of the biggest names in the business. Dave Gunning, Matt Andersen, David Myles, and Joel Plaskett will tell you that recording changed things. That first album received a Juno nomination and won an East Coast Music Award. 16 albums followed the success of that one – winning 12 more ECMA's, another Juno nomination, a Canadian Folk Music Award, and 5 Music Nova Scotia Awards.
J.P. has an active YouTube channel where he connects with fans. Every week he posts new episodes of Life In Music, Guitar Stuff With John, and the Wednesday night live broadcast of String Theory, an interactive question-and-answer show.
People still leave his shows amazed and wondering what they just saw. Did they see a storyteller? Songwriter? Someone who crosses the lines between different instruments like there are no lines? Arguably one of the best guitar players today? Of all the things he is, foremost, an entertainer.
This winter, J.P. is touring with Jake Lauzon. Jake has followed a similar path to J. P., drawn to folk, roots and bluegrass, and has become an accomplished guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. He has a busy schedule freelancing, recording and teaching. His music has taken him to many North American stages, including performances at the Celtic Colours International Festival, and Nashville’s renowned Station Inn, touring with “Nothin’ Fancy’’ and Dave Gunning and J.P. Cormier.
