The hall of All Saints' Anglican Cathedral was full of colour and celebration during the noon-hour on Tuesday, April 26, as the cathedral hosted a Hawaiian themed lunch for folks from the surrounding community. About 40 friends and neighbours enjoyed rice, salad, sweet and sour meatballs, tropical punch and delicious, colourful cupcakes for dessert.
Cathedral dean, Alex Meek, and vicar, Ruth Sessink Bott, give credit to their administrative assistant, Darlene Neiderhaus, who has been organising the lunches approximately every two months with the help of volunteers. Always themed and always fun, many prepare ahead with costumes, games or door prizes, and several who have attended have come back the next time, bringing friends and family with them. Some have even joined the volunteer crew. Several 'regulars' stay after lunch for the weekly game of Bingo, which happens at the cathedral every Tuesday from 1:30-3:30pm.
The programming is all part of the cathedral's ongoing efforts to serve and connect with people who live in the downtown core, and especially those who live right next door to the cathedral in Cathedral Close seniors housing.
