Bishop Stephen London participated in the final service for the Rev. Hugh Matheson as rector of Immanuel, Wetaskiwin, on Sunday, February 23, 2025. Matheson is retiring from ministry, and after 10 years, Brownlee's role as Aboriginal and rural churches liaison with the diocese's Indigenous ministries team is no longer being continued.

In Bishop Stephen's words: "The service was deeply moving to me. I recognize Hugh as a deeply faithful pastor for Jesus Christ who has spent a career in service and love.

"At the end of the service, he did something I had never seen, but it was beautiful. During the last hymn, he removed his vestments in front of the congregation and then went to sit with his wife. What a powerful symbol.

"I was happy and honoured to say a few words of appreciation for the work of both Hugh and Fiona and the impact they have had on our diocese and to give certificates. To quote someone very important to all of us: 'Well done, good and faithful servants.'"
