A recent musical Coffee House at Holy Trinity in Edson was abuzz with a youthful energy.
The coffee houses were started by songwriters and friends Myrna Downer, Ingrid Heise and Judy Heise, known as the music trio Jumyin, 20 years ago, to share original songs and raise funds to help make a positive difference in their community.
The most recent coffee house, held in June, attracted a younger audience with crafts and games before the musical performances, and children volunteering behind the scenes. Kids opened the event by carrying chimes tuned to “Amazing Grace,” and joining in with the musicians on percussion once the music started. Three young musicians then played alongside the adult performers.
“It was heartwarming to see adults who had been taught in our Junior Youth Group many years ago, return with their own children to have fun at the church,” says Myrna Downer. “More than 50 people from various churches gathered in a true spirit of harmony. The decorating for the Angel Garden theme was done in memory of my beautiful sister Maxine Armagost who has gone to her heavenly home.”
Downer, a member of Holy Trinity, Edson, says the first coffee house, held in 2004, “turned out to be a lovely evening in support of World Vision and the Primate World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF). The loving support of two talented local musicians who came to see what we were doing, encouraged us to continue this music ministry.”
She continues: “As with all small seeds in fertile soil, this event grew over time to include many more events and many musically talented people who have been willing to share their music too. Maxine Armagost became our exclusive decorator, transforming spaces according to each chosen theme. For one of our Coffee House evenings, she created a river at the front of the church.
“All truly good gifts do come from God and this ministry has always been joy-filled, no matter the size of the turn-out. We called it the little event with the big heart.
“The list of causes we have supported is long, but one in support of the Red Cross to help victims of the devastating Tsunami in 2005, brought in more than $5,000. Thirteen different musicians played during the six-hour event.
“Sometimes, we have chosen to support missions close to our hearts, like Compassion House, On Eagles Wings, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Wildlife Federation to name a few. We have also supported the monthly missions chosen by our church members at our annual general meetings, and the church budget when needed. For a few years we also supported the St. Catherine’s Building Fund.
“Always remember to invite the Lord into the heart of your ministry. Of course, we know He always walks beside us, but when we truly invite Him, the beauty of His presence shines everywhere.
“Thank you everyone for 20 years of ministry!”
