Edmonton Diocese Celebrates Lay Readerswith Choral Evensong at All Saints' Cathedral A multi-parish congregation gathered at All Saints’ Cathedral Sunday evening, June 2, 2019, for a Choral Evensong service celebrating the gifts of lay readers in the Edmonton diocese. The congregation may have been unaccustomed to the Book of Common Prayer liturgy (Choral Evensong is offered by the cathedral on the first Sunday of the month at 7 pm) - taking direction from Bishop Jane as to when to sit or to stand - yet worship participants were enthralled by the poetic language and exquisite music performed by All Saints’ music director and organist Jeremy Spurgeon and the cathedral choir. Communion in the WoodsBeaumont deacon invites all to Lawnchair Church On Sunday mornings, from spring until fall, residents of and visitors to the Whispering Spruce RV Resort, 100 kms south of Edmonton at the Village of Pigeon Lake, are invited to pull up a lawn chair and worship together ecumenically in a sacred space in the woods. In the shade of spruce trees and shielded from mosquitoes as few as one person and as many as 10 people have stepped onto the deck of a camping trailer and through the zippered doorway of a gazebo to share in the eucharist with the Rev. Opportunity to Serve with General Synod
Are you interested in offering your skills for the ministry of the General Synod through its Coordinating and Standing Committees? One of the triennial acts of the meeting of General Synod, July 10-16 in Vancouver, is to elect members to the various standing and coordinating committees which oversee the work and planning of the many and varied ministries of the General Synod. Registration for Education for Ministry is now open. The program gives lay people a basic grounding in the main theological subjects. It runs September through May, with registration due by July 15. Walk for Common Ground: Treaty TalkEdmonton to Calgary: May 31 to June 14, 2019 Join Archdeacon Travis Enright and other local faith and Indigenous community members in the Walk for Common Ground 2019, from May 31 to June 14, 2019. Over 15 days, team of 30 core walkers will journey 350 km from Edmonton (leaving Ivor Dent Park at 2 pm on Friday) to Calgary. Along the way they will stop in 15 different communities to engage in conversations around our responsibilities as Treaty partners. Every evening walkers will facilitate a short Treaty teaching session followed by a Talking Circle. The intention is to engage Indigenous and non-Indigenous citizens in reflection and dialogue about the myths, facts and obligations of Treaty relationships and create a safe space to explore better future possibilities. A Christian Response to the Opioid Crisis
More than 10,300 Canadians have died from an opioid overdose in the past two years. And the number continues to grow. Crossroads Christian Communications believes this emergency must be intentionally addressed by the Canadian faith community. In response, they are hosting Canada Cares: Getting Connected on the Opioid Crisis – a free event dedicated to education, compassion and prayer, growing a deeper understanding of God’s heart for this crisis in our nation.
