No Room in the Inn 20th Anniversary

Representatives of faith communities, agencies helping vulnerable people and the City of Edmonton attended a ceremony at Edmonton City Hall on June 12 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of No Room in the Inn. Since 1999, No Room in the Inn (NRII), an ecumenical initiative of the Edmonton & District Council of Churches (EDCC), has raised more than $1 million for organizations addressing the housing needs of vulnerable people. The campaign is inspired by the story of Mary and Joseph, who arrived in Bethlehem to discover no room for them in the inn. They found a place in a stable, where they welcomed their son, Jesus.

Heart Garden at Immanuel, Wetaskiwin

Heart Garden at Immanuel, Wetaskiwin

As a group of adults and children gathered at Immanuel, Wetaskiwin on Saturday, June 15th to plant their Heart Garden a question was asked. Who do we remember as we come together to learn? Gloria Rogers, a member of the parish’s Reconciliation Team, shared how her own mother had been taken to Residential School had her hair cut, wasn’t allowed to speak in her own language, came back from that school broken inside. This is why we need to remember Residential Schools and the damage they did to First Nations communities.

Each year the Reconciliation Team at Immanuel has had various crafts go along with planting of the garden. Gloria then went on to teach everyone how to make a dreamcatcher using paper plates.

Confirmations Celebrated on Pentecost Sunday

Confirmations Celebrated on Pentecost Sunday

Bishop visits Good Shepherd on Green, Growing Sunday, a service inspired by children and youth

The Holy Spirit was definitely present at Pentecost celebrations at Good Shepherd! We were delighted to celebrate a Green, Growing Sunday with Bishop Jane present for confirmations, receptions, and reaffirmations. On monthly Green, Growing Sundays, children and youth take over the service and this was in evidence. They joined the opening procession with orange banners to represent the holy flame, read lessons and announcements, participated in a lively interactive sermon, and stood at the altar to watch the consecration of the elements for the eucharist. We were overjoyed on this occasion to witness the confirmation of three teens and two adults, as well as the reception and reaffirmation of three more adults. Huge thanks to all our volunteers and to the ACW for providing a yummy strawberry tea and cake after the service.

Pentecost at St. Matthew, St. Albert

Pentecost at St. Matthew, St. Albert

This is what happens when the Holy Spirit inhabits St. Matthew's, St. Albert. You get tongues of fire in the shape of balloons. You get a chain of Holy Spirit fire that spans from the heavens (or the ceiling) to the pulpit. You get a fire and brimstone preacher who, inspired by the Holy Spirit, is animated and passionate. Or a preacher who is anything that is fire and brimstone in his words. One who preaches hope. One who preaches growth. One who preaches inspiration. And one who preaches peace. And one who preaches, above all else, the positive impact we can have on the world around us when empowered by the Holy Spirit. And the best part, you get Sparky: the on-fire choir member who sings with the greatest and squeakiest vigour, somewhat similar to air being strategically let out of a balloon!   Submitted by Angela Bokenfohr
