For 10 days this April, when eating and relaxing are often the last things on university students’ minds as they prepare for exams, Holy Trinity Anglian Church is opening its space for students to drop in, unwind and have a bowl of soup. 

Each weekday until April 26, from 4 to 6:30 pm, Annie Randall, the parish’s newly appointed coordinator for young adults, newcomers and social justice initiatives, and the Rev. Danielle Key, rector, welcome students to the Exams Week Soup and Study (or don't study) Drop-in. 

The parish, located about a 20-minute walk or 5-minute bike or bus ride from the university campus, is offering students communal space with comfy couches and a TV for unwinding, as well as quiet rooms for studying.

What if you didn’t have any Scripture in your language? That is true for 1/2 of the language groups around the world. But God is actively bringing His Word to all people! All Saints’ Anglican Church, Drayton Valley is hosting John and Juanita Feniak to share some of the amazing stories of God at work around the world. We welcome everyone to come and join us. Erin de Zwart, a French Language and Canadian Studies student at the University of Alberta is coordinating a community project to tidy up St. Martin's Sunnyside Cemetery, where the remains of some of her White, Milligan and Hewitt ancestors are interred. There will be a St. Martin's Sunnyside Cemetery (Bon Accord) work bee on Saturday, April 29 (weather permitting), from 10 am to 5 pm. This pioneer cemetery was last maintained in 1997, so volunteers are asked to bring wheelbarrows, gumboots, warm clothes, gardening gloves and steel-toe boots if operating machinery. There will be a safety briefing prior to the event. Coffee and donuts will be provided. Parking will be provided a few minutes away, with a shuttle from the parking lot. Interested volunteers are asked to visit the website for more info and to register.

Friday night, April 28, the monthly Cursillo gathering (Ultreya) will be held at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, 8424 95 Avenue, Edmonton. Sue Wilson will be our guest speaker talking about the changes that take place over a Cursillo weekend. Then Saturday, April 29 we are loading up cars and heading to the United Church in Vegreville for a taste of Cursillo, from 10am to 2pm. All are welcome to join us. A light lunch will be severed. We will be car pooling, if you are interested, meeting at the Walmart parking lot at Emerald Hills in Sherwood Park. We will leave at 8:30am. Join the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton's team for disability and inclusion on Saturday, April 29, at 3 pm, as we workshop a new, accessible family service designed for autistic, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and neurodivergent children, youth and adults. 

The service, to be held at St. Faith's, 11725-93 St NW, Edmonton, will include crafts, music, interactive study of the Gospel and a shared celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Folk of all ages, neurotypes and denominations are welcome here, and creative expressions of individual spirituality are honoured. We will provide allergy-friendly snacks, quiet space for sensory breaks and volunteers to support participants as needed.

If you have not had a chance to see the Diocese of Edmonton Children's Choir, under the direction of Laura Hawley, in action be sure to catch The Promise of Spring, their year-end concert, on Sunday, April 30, at 2 pm, at Christ Church, 12116 102 Ave NW, Edmonton. This will be a combined concert with the Cantabo Choir, directed by Dr. Joy Berg, and Jessica Heine. The Immanuel Reconciliation Team is committed to raising awareness of the ongoing crisis of Murdered & Missing Indigenous Women, Girls, & 2 Spirit folk. For the third year, we will be hanging red dresses in Jubilee Park in Wetaskiwin. On Sunday, April 30, at 2:30 pm, we will gather in the park to smudge the dresses and ourselves and then hang the dresses throughout the park. On Friday, May 5, at 5:00 pm, we will gather at the Peace Cairn in Wetaskiwin for a remembrance of Murdered & Missing Indigenous Women, Girls & 2 Spirit folk. All are welcome to join us.

Teeny Tiny Books of the Old Testament Bible Study! You are invited to join the Rev. Danielle Key, rector of Holy Trinity, Edmonton, as she dives into some of the smallest books of the Old Testament. The Diocese of Edmonton is inviting families to take a break on the weekend of Friday, July 7 to Sunday, July 9, 2023 and come relax together at Camp Van Es, located a half hour southeast of Edmonton. 

Led by Archdeacon Sue Oliver, this weekend will be a time for families to get away from their everyday routines and enjoy the outdoors. There will be times for learning and for fun. There will be cabins to rent or places to park your RV. Save the date and watch for updates!  Registration will open soon. 

Last year at the beginning of Lent we began the diocesan Remembering the Children weaving project. At the summer solstice, National Indigenous Peoples Day, we blessed the finished project at a special service at the Cathedral. We now have the weaving available to visit parishes. You might think the only good time to have the weaving visit your parish is in September or October. Not true! Anytime you want to deepen your parish's connection to the ministry of reconciliation in our diocese is a good time to do it. St. Timothy’s Anglican Church in the Laurier Heights neighbourhood of Edmonton is seeking a leader for our Sunday Morning “Kids’ Church” program.  We are using the sermons4kids resource. This provides a short sermon, colouring sheet, activity pages, song suggestions to accompany the weekly Lectionary Gospel. The leader would be supported by volunteers to maintain the necessary Safe Church ratios of children:adults and to provide musical support. This is a paid position. At Songquest the Kokopelli Choir Association’s three youngest choirs get an annual chance to strut their stuff. “It’s always so much fun to see these kids shine when they have the spotlight all to themselves,” says Scott Leithead, Kokopelli’s artistic director. Over the years, Tamariki (ages 5–9), Kikimasu (ages 8–12) and Shumayela (ages 12–16) have all developed into accomplished programs. Songquest audiences have come to expect delightful, energetic shows, brimming with youthful enthusiasm (and healthy doses of fun and silliness). Songquest takes place at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 15 at McDougall United Church, 10025 101 Street NW, Edmonton. Tickets ($20, students $15, children $10) are available online or at the door.

This workshop to be held on Saturday, April 22, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, followed by six Tuesday evenings, is for the curious, questioning…all those seeking a deeper relationship with Ultimate Mystery through a prayer practice of interior silence. Centering Prayer is a simple, and inclusive practice deeply rooted in the Christian Contemplative tradition, popularized by Fr. Thomas Keating, a Cistercian priest & monk, and one of the principal founders of the practice. This workshop provides background on the four guidelines of the method, time to practice, and learning from the teachings of Fr. Keating. Registration is $100.

Mondays: April 24, May 29 and June 26 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at Star of the North Retreat Center. Come to one, two or all three. Cost for each day is $55 with discounts available for teams or couples.

These retreat days are designed for those in ministry, training for ministry, retired from ministry, and spouses. The day will begin with a contemplative prayer practice, followed by a morning of silence to rest, reflect, walk, journal, pray, etc. After lunch, we'll have another contemplative prayer practice and more time for personal reflection. We'll end the day in a closing circle.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) has launched its annual appeal to fill a sea can of food, and new or gently used items for the village of Ulukhaktok, NWT, and the Anglican Church of the Resurrection which is in need of repairs. The sea cans are packed in early May, and shipped in May and June while the McKenzie River and ocean waters are open.

The Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) is excited to announce the 2nd Leading Change Summit, May 2-4, 2023 at various locations in Edmonton. This summit will focus on ideas, research, and emerging practices in visioning, fostering, and sustaining more ethical spaces in gender-based violence prevention.
