Diocesan Executive Council Adopts Comprehensive Safe Church Policy

Diocesan Executive Council Adopts Comprehensive Safe Church Policy

Members of the Diocese of Edmonton Executive Council, elected and appointed representatives from across the diocese, recently took measures to help ensure our church communities are safe spaces for everyone.

Executive Council voted to receive the Safe Church Policy, which will supersede the previous Safe Church document as of April 1, 2025.

The comprehensive, 56-page document, which includes a quick reference guide, was reviewed by several diocesan committees, including the Diocesan Advisory and Response Team (DART), the newly established Policy and Procedures Committee and the Administration and Finance Committee, before being brought to Executive Council.

“I’m grateful for the work of a number of people who are truly passionate about making our churches safe,” says Bishop Stephen London. “Churches on a whole have lost credibility on this issue. It is time for our diocese to lead in this area.”

Parish Directory Maintenance

When was the last time you updated your church directory?

It is recommended that every parish complete directory maintenance annually or every second year, as databases are only useful if continuously maintained. Database information is both useful for keeping in touch with parishioners and is required to submit the diocesan statistics.

Church members may forget to notify the parish of changes of address, phone numbers, or email, so asking all members to submit those items annually (even if they have not changed) ensures the directory is kept current. This also allows the parish to easily identify families/individuals they have not heard from in a while, enabling a clergy member or parish volunteer to reach out.

Christian Basics Course Coming to a Parish Near You

Christian Basics Course Coming to a Parish Near You

Retired Anglican priest the Rev. Tim Chesterton is excited to take Christian Basics, a short course about the central Gospel message, on the road. Chesterton is offering this opportunity to every parish in the diocese. For parishes outside the greater Edmonton area, the course will be offered on a weekend (Friday evening plus Saturday morning and afternoon). For parishes in Edmonton and its satellite communities, it can also be presented as four evening sessions over four weeks.

There is no charge for the course, but Chesterton asks that his travel costs be reimbursed at the diocesan rate. Also, he will need an estimate of how many people will be attending the course, as this makes a difference to the presentation style.

Not Feeling Well? Please Worship from Home

Not Feeling Well? Please Worship from Home

Cold and flu season is upon us, and COVID persists in all its variations. As we spend more time indoors, it is becoming more difficult to contain germs and protect vulnerable members of our communities. Please remember that a minor infection for one person can develop into a major sickness for someone else. If you are feeling unwell (ie. have a cough, runny nose, sore throat, chest congestion, fever...), please stay home.
