Annual Outdoor Way of the Cross, Holy Week Retreat at Providence Cetre

Lent has begun! May your communities of faith be blessed as you journey with Jesus towards the cross.

Here are a couple of amazing opportunities to participate in ecumenical offerings relating to Holy Week observance. Please take time to consider participating in these events and share with your networks.

1. The Outdoor Way of the Cross 2026: This will take place on Friday, April 3, at 10 am. This year's theme is: "Whatsoever You Do: Seeing, Naming, and Protecting the Rights of People as Part of Creation." The walk will begin and end at Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples (10821 96 Street). For more details and to share with your community, please see the POSTER and BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENT.

2. Holy Week Retreat at Providence Renewal Centre: This will take place March 29 - April 5 with Fr. Mike Dechant, OMI. The theme is: "Repent (Metanoia), the Kingdom of God is Near." The focus of the Holy Week Retreat is an "Examination of Consciousness" - to embrace the notion of "metanoia" - a profound, transformational change of mind, heart, and life, to move beyond one's old way of thinking, to embrace God's truth, leading to new actions and a transformed life aligned with the Kingdom of God. See the POSTER for more details and to share with your community.

REVIVE begins April 25, 2026

The Diocese of Edmonton is once again offering the Revive program. Revive is a discipleship program offered in gratitude to active church members to help them grow in confidence as spiritual leaders.  The Revive program reflects the Inviting Witness and Purposeful Discipleship pillars of our strategic plan, which call for an empowered laity serving as equals alongside a collaborative and team-oriented clergy. It reflects our belief that all who are baptised are called to share in the mission of God through their unique ministries.

The 2026 Revive cohort will follow a hybrid model on Tuesday evenings under the leadership of the Rev. Andreas Sigrist. You may join in person at St. Matthias (6210 188 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5T 5T4) or online on Tuesday evenings. We are pleased to be offering this program free of charge. Register now!

Reflections on Evangelism by Eric Kregel

Reflections on Evangelism by Eric Kregel

Part 1: Is Evangelism Colonialism?

This is an excerpt from a blog post called "Is Evangelism Colonialism?" by the Rev. Dr. Eric Kregel, Chaplain for Lay Evangelists in the Diocese of Edmonton. Read the rest here.

Imagine California, before it belonged to the US or Mexico. Instead, Spain had claimed it for the Glory of the Crown and the Cross. Soldiers were sent to conquer the land, but they first sent the Jesuits, the “Black Robes”. The Jesuits would meet with the Indigenous peoples to preach the Gospel, to make Christians of these “savages”.

By design of the Crown, those original Californians were to surrender to Christ so that they would become servants of Spain, of a Christian Nation.  Refuse, and you would face the sword of soldiers who would be just around the corner, waiting to colonize.

Evangelism prepared the way for a political reign on Earth.  For you see, the belief was that if the King, the Queen, and all of those who led Spain were Christian--really Christian--then Spain would be a Christian nation. And if you did not serve this Christian Nation, you would be standing against God himself. ...

When we hear of the practice of “Evangelism”, it may sound like how people sold Colonialism.   Evangelism was a way to talk people into joining and serving, at whatever level, the bigger thing that we slapped a cross atop and said it belongs to God.

So, is Evangelism Colonialism? Continue reading here.

Spread the Word - Support Each Other and Our Ministry

we are happy to help spread the word

Part of what unites us as a family of churches is the support we give one another and our ministries. We can do this by sharing our news and events (e.g., youth gatherings, parish fundraisers, worship services, community outreach, public lectures) here in the Synod Scene, the diocese's weekly e-newsletter. We have created a form to simplify this task. Click on the button below to upload a graphic or picture (horizontal / landscape orientation; 1500x784 px), and your brief news/event information. Submissions must be received by Tuesday at noon for inclusion in the current week's newsletter. Because the Synod Scene is public and posted to the diocesan website every week, please use parish (not personal) contact information in your submissions whenever possible. Have questions?
