Now Hiring: Lay-Led Parishes Coordinator

Now Hiring: Lay-Led Parishes Coordinator

The Diocese of Edmonton is hiring a Coordinator for Lay-Led Parishes.

A growing number of our communities are led by lay staff and volunteers. This mode of being an Anglican community comes with unique gifts and challenges. This position will develop supports and systems to help these parishes find renewed viability and vitality as the lay leaders hold mission and ministry for their communities. You will work with diocesan staff and volunteers as well as directly with the lay-led communities to coordinate their facilitation, education, and oversight needs. As most of these parishes are in rural areas of the Diocese of Edmonton, you must be able to travel.

This is a quarter-time position for one year with a possible one-year extension. The application deadline is Thursday, June 4.

2026 Bishop's Fund Dinner

2026 Bishop's Fund Dinner

Thank you to everyone who helped make the 2026 Bishop's Fund Dinner a success!

The sold-out event raised funds to support clergy in the Diocese of Edmonton with extraordinary needs, such as family emergencies, travel for funerals, and unexpected medical costs.

Over the past six decades, the Bishop’s Fund Committee has invited visionary leaders to share insights and experience from their professional vocations. This year's keynote speaker was Dr. Jordan Stanger-Ross, a History Professor from the University of Victoria. Dr. Stanger-Ross is also the Director of Past Wrongs, Future Choices, an international initiative committed to telling the history of the incarceration and deportation of people of Japanese descent during the Second World War and its aftermath so that we can learn from past events and forge new paths forward.

Scam Alert

Scam Alert

Several of our parishes have received emails asking for digital copies of parish directories. These emails are written to appear to come from real parishioners and use email addresses that look legitimate, e.g. [name]@shaw.ca. Our churches take confidentiality of personal information very seriously and scams are becoming more sophisticated all the time, so it is important to be very cautious. Do not forward parish directories to anyone without speaking to them directly by phone or in person first.

Thy Kingdom Come Begins This Week

Thy Kingdom Come Begins This Week

global ecumenical prayer movement - Ascension to Pentecost

From thykingdomcome.global:

Thy Kingdom Come (TKC) is a global ecumenical prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray from Ascension [May 14] to Pentecost [May 24] for more people to come to know Jesus.

Since it began in May 2016,  God has grown TKC from a dream of possibility into a movement which unites more than a million Christians in prayer, in nearly 90% of countries worldwide, across 85 different denominations and traditions- so that friends and family, neighbours and colleagues might come to faith in Jesus Christ.

Every person, household, and church is encouraged to pray during the 11 days in their own way. It is our hope & prayer that those who have not yet heard the Good News of Jesus Christ and His love for the world will hear it for themselves and respond and follow Him.

Specifically, we again invite each and every Christian across the globe to pray that God’s Spirit might work in the lives of 5 people who have not responded with their ‘Yes’ to God’s call.
Whether you have joined in ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ before or not, we invite you to take part & join in.

To pray is to share every part of yourself and your life with God. To pray together is to share our lives with God and in the work of God; moving closer to God, to each other and the world. Let us pray together Thy Kingdom Come. - Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally

Church Admin Corner: Financial Records

Church Admin Corner: Financial Records

what to keep, how long to keep them, and how to dispose of them

Last week, we talked about parish registers and their importance. The next two weeks will continue with some other important parish records and how long to retain them.

For this week, we will focus on financial records. Financial records, including bank statements, records of income and expenditures, offering envelopes, and tax receipts, should be held by the parish for a period of seven years. It is recommended that, at the end of a fiscal year, all financial records from the previous year should be boxed up together. That box should then be clearly labeled with the year of the contents and the year it should be destroyed (items from 2025 should be destroyed at the end of 2032 or in 2033). Records to be destroyed should be shredded so as not to discard private financial information of the parish or parishioners.

Annual financial statements should be retained and archived. But, as these statements are included with parish Annual Meeting packages, those meeting packages are the important piece for retention.

If you still have offering envelopes, bank statements, and cheque stubs from 2018 or before, this summer would be a great time to shred them.

If you have any questions about specific records and whether they should be kept, destroyed, or archived, please do not hesitate to contact the Synod Office at churched@edmonton.anglican.ca.

May 21: Star of the North Fundraising Dinner

May 21: Star of the North Fundraising Dinner

We are blessed to have the Star of the North Retreat House in St. Albert host clergy retreats, Cursillo weekends, and more. Now you can help this beautiful place continue to offer ministry in the Edmonton area.

You are invited to attend their fundraising dinner on May 21.

Come celebrate with us by attending a Starlight fundraising dinner hosted by the Star of the North Retreat Centre in partnership with the Missionary Associates of Mary Immaculate (M.A.M.I) on May 21.

Our theme for the evening, “Living Mission Through Community,” celebrates two centuries of missionary enthusiasm, faithful service, and Oblate commitment bringing hope, healing, and Good News to the most abandoned.

As part of this anniversary, and guided by our motto “Renewing our Spirits – Transforming our World,” the Star is renewing our mission and vision for the future.

Spread the Word - Support Each Other and Our Ministry

Spread the Word - Support Each Other and Our Ministry

we are happy to help spread the word

Part of what unites us as a family of churches is the support we give one another and our ministries. We can do this by sharing our news and events (e.g., youth gatherings, parish fundraisers, worship services, community outreach, public lectures) here in the Synod Scene, the diocese's weekly e-newsletter. We have created a form to simplify this task. Click on the button below to upload a graphic or picture (horizontal / landscape orientation; 1500x784 px), and your brief news/event information. Submissions must be received by Tuesday at noon for inclusion in the current week's newsletter. Because the Synod Scene is public and posted to the diocesan website every week, please use parish (not personal) contact information in your submissions whenever possible. Have questions?
