BISHOP'S CORNER

Remembering Pope Francis

Remembering Pope Francis

The Edmonton along with Bishop Stephen London, were saddened to hear the news of the death of Pope Francis, 88, on Monday morning.

"I join with the whole world in grieving his passing, and I know that I am expressing the condolences and prayers on behalf of many in the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton," says Bishop Steve."Pope Francis was a big inspiration to me. I felt he embodied the vision of the church of Jesus Christ that is humble, simple and generous. He constantly advocated for the poor and marginalized, and invited people into a life-giving relationship with Jesus Christ. I loved his serious faith as well as his spontaneous laughter. He delighted in people and made hard institutional decisions. He was a generous Ecumenist and worked hard for a more just and peaceful world.

"May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

"My prayers are with my Roman Catholic siblings as they bury and grieve their beloved pope (this Saturday), and then turn to the prayerful discernment of the selection of their next spiritual leader. May God’s grace be with you."

St. Thomas' Lay Leaders Offer Creative and Passionate Easter Services

The lay leaders of St. Thomas Anglican Church continue to ensure that their parish is an integral part of the Wainwright community by consistently and passionately providing creative worship opportunities, such as several services over Holy Week and Easter.

As one-third of the Dayspring shared ministry (which includes St. Mary’s, Edgerton, and St. Saviour’s, Vermilion), St. Thomas is still searching for an incumbent, yet the parish held its second annual Agape Meal and Handwashing Service on Maundy Thursday, led by Allan Samm.

Copyright Licensing

We touched briefly on copyright last week. Generally, all printed texts, music (printed and recorded), and images are copyrighted material and require permission to use or reproduce.

Many copyright licensing companies grant parishes the right to use or reproduce copyrighted material. Two of the most commonly used licences for church music are CCLI and One License. Any parish can acquire a licensing agreement through one of these companies.

Alternatively, if a parish owns multiple copies of a hymnal and is not reproducing the content in any way (even just the lyrics), the hymnals can be used by the congregation without a licence.

Note: Online streaming of copyrighted material requires additional licensing, even if images of the copyrighted materials are not displayed on screen.

The Bishop of Edmonton invites applications for the full-time position of Rector of St. Paul’s in Edmonton. The closing date is May 19, 2025.

“We love to be together, persevere and practice the ways of Jesus together. Even though we’re at different places on our journey, we share a guiding story as given through the Bible, and we all look for Jesus in each other and in the world we live in. We share faith, we share music, we share differences, and above all, we share God’s love for us in Jesus. We all give; we all receive. We are a diverse family who laughs, cries, and prays together and is learning how to love and care for each other. Our greatest ambition is to share this love with everyone around us – in our neighbourhoods and around the world.”
