Celebration of Ministry with Parish of Immanuel, Wetaskiwin

Celebration of Ministry with Parish of Immanuel, Wetaskiwin

Bishop Stephen London participated in the final service for the Rev. Hugh Matheson as rector of Immanuel, Wetaskiwin, on Sunday, February 23, 2025. Matheson is retiring from ministry, and after 10 years, Brownlee's role as Aboriginal and rural churches liaison with the diocese's Indigenous ministries team is no longer being continued.

In Bishop Stephen's words: "The service was deeply moving to me. I recognize Hugh as a deeply faithful pastor for Jesus Christ who has spent a career in service and love.

"At the end of the service, he did something I had never seen, but it was beautiful. During the last hymn, he removed his vestments in front of the congregation and then went to sit with his wife. What a powerful symbol.

"I was happy and honoured to say a few words of appreciation for the work of both Hugh and Fiona and the impact they have had on our diocese and to give certificates. To quote someone very important to all of us: 'Well done, good and faithful servants.'"

General Synod Council to Discuss Radical Changes to Church

General Synod Council to Discuss Radical Changes to Church

As Anglican Journal staff writer Matthew Puddister so aptly states, the March meeting of the Council of General Synod (CoGS) will discuss “radical structural changes that if carried out could change the Anglican Church of Canada forever. On the table, among other topics, will be the presentation to CoGS of findings from Reimagining the Church: Proclaiming the Gospel in the 21st Century, a primate’s commission tasked with re-examining church structures that has surveyed Anglicans across the country on a range of topics, including the potential elimination of General Synod or the ecclesiastical provinces and the cessation of funding for the Anglican Journal, at least as a journalistic entity…” Read Primate’s commission to present ‘pathways’ for change in six areas to national council

Christian Basics Course Coming to a Parish Near You

Christian Basics Course Coming to a Parish Near You

Retired Anglican priest the Rev. Tim Chesterton is excited to take Christian Basics, a short course about the central Gospel message, on the road. Chesterton is offering this opportunity to every parish in the diocese. For parishes outside the greater Edmonton area, the course will be offered on a weekend (Friday evening plus Saturday morning and afternoon). For parishes in Edmonton and its satellite communities, it can also be presented as four evening sessions over four weeks.

There is no charge for the course, but Chesterton asks that his travel costs be reimbursed at the diocesan rate. Also, he will need an estimate of how many people will be attending the course, as this makes a difference to the presentation style.

Calming the Storm and Navigating Fractured Relationships

Equipping Respectful Dialogue Across Differences

In a world where it seems everyone is angry with one another, the thought of coming together in unity and compassion can be overwhelming. Trinity Lutheran Church, 10014 81 Ave, Edmonton, will host a "Calming the Storm" workshop on Saturday, March 15, from 9 am to 3 pm. Daranne Harris, a specialist in sharing difficult conversations across divides through Catalyzing Compassion, will lead us in a skill-building session about how to connect with people during an age of polarization. The registration fee is $5, and lunch is provided. Please email Pastor Erin Thomas at erin.thomas@trinity-lutheran.ab.ca if you have dietary restrictions. This workshop is open to anyone who wants to improve their communication skills and strengthen their confidence in navigating fractured relationships. Not Feeling Well? Please Worship from Home

Cold and flu season is upon us, and COVID persists in all its variations. As we spend more time indoors, it is becoming more difficult to contain germs and protect vulnerable members of our communities. Please remember that a minor infection for one person can develop into a major sickness for someone else. If you are feeling unwell (ie. have a cough, runny nose, sore throat, chest congestion, fever...), please stay home.
